PAMANA VIII

Celebrating Filipino Heritage with PAMANA VIII

The Cultural Society of Filipino Americans presents PAMANA VIII, a show featuring ethnic Filipino dances and music, at 7:30 pm on September 26, 2009 at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, 12600 Nicollet Avenue, Burnsville. PAMANA, the eighth in the series, tells the Filipino story of over 500 years of history through dances showing the diversity and richness of the Filipino culture.

The show is divided into four suites:

Cordillera (Igorot Suite) depicts the rituals and pageantry of the tribes of the Cordilleras in northern Philippines and characterized by the pounding rhythms of the gongs and intricately woven G-strings, skirts, and blankets.

Sarimanok (Muslim Suite) depicts royal pageantry in the Muslim regions of southern Philippines. The costumes and music document the drama of the Muslims’ resistance to the influences of other cultures.

Los Bailes de Ayer (Maria Clara Suite) highlights an elite aristocratic class during the Spanish era from the 1500s to the1890s and shows the languid waltzes, Spanish-inspired costumes, and string orchestra music.

Sa Aming Nayon (Rural Suite) portrays the daily lives of farmers, fisher folks and other peasants as they celebrate the joys and frustrations of daily living. Music is set to indigenous materials such as bamboo sticks and coconut shells.

PAMANA VIII is made possible through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and the Irish Fair of Minnesota and help from numerous volunteers and supporters of the CSFA.
